In 1993, China had 8,651 environmental protection businesses which employed some 1.9 million people, had an annual turnover of Yuan31,100 million ($5,400 million) and profits of Yuan4,000 million, according to the first national survey of China's environmental protection industry by the National Environmental Protection Agency (NEPA). The number of businesses in 1993 is thought to have increased by 71% compared with 1988, and annual turnover and profits to have doubled, according to a Xinhua news agency report from the BBC Monitoring Service.
