Angola: Trapped in the cross fire
For 35 years, Franco Tomaz hasbeen riding the Benguela Railway, which carries rust-red copper ore from landlocked mines in Zaire and Zambia to Angola's Atlantic ports. Though proud of rising to the job of inspector, the bespectacled 60-year-old Tomaz is despondent about the outlook for his beloved railroad. "This is supposed to to be a full operation," he says sadly, "but there's no work." There is no work because Angola is riven by a high-stakes civil war being waged between factions armed by East and West, transforming the resource-laden land into one of the clearest tests of U.S.-Soviet competition in the Third World.
