With 13% of its gas requirement being supplied by Norway and 27% by the Netherlands, Germany now depends heavily on Gazprom. Its imports of Russian gas grew to 26 BCM in 1995 and will be higher in 1996. There will be a big jump in Gazprom sales to Germany as from 1997 and a bigger one in 2001 onwards, as the Dutch company Gasunie will begin buying gas from Gazprom because its Dutch reserves will be depleting.
Gazprom penetrated the German market in a big way through its JV with BASF unit Wintershall called Wingas (65% Wintershall, 35% Gazprom). It created a gas distribution structure allowing Wingas to have an 8.5% share of a market 80% held by Ruhrgas which relies on ...
