IT SHOULDN'T BE hard to understand the two pointsof view. On the one hand the frenetic undertow of competition, and the feeling that that which must eventually happen (the retirement of Mr. Shawn) should perhaps be accelerated (to accommodate anxious business and editorial pressures). That is the point of view of management, and management's concern for quality of leadership is documented by its choice of a successor, a bookish, imaginative editor, Robert Gottlieb, in some ways not unlike his legendary predecessor.
