Efforts to boost investment in the domestic energy sector have been picking up. Uzbekistan is set to become self-sufficient in its energy needs, which will grow as its economy begins to expand. With a population of over 22.6 million, Uzbekistan is the largest consumer of gas among the Central Asian states. Uzbekistan's gas consumption has risen by nearly 9 million tons of oil equivalent (mtoe) between 1985 and 1995. Oil consumption in this country has been falling steadily, from about 11.4 million tons (230,000 b/d) in 1985 to 6.7 million tons (135,000 b/d) in 1995.
