Article: $41,000m for China's environmental protection?

China is expected to spend between Yuan220-320,000 million ($26,500-38,500 million) on upgrading environmental protection equipment by the year 2000. A report by the China Daily indicated that the country is "to spend heavily to import foreign technology in its battle to curb pollution and limit damage to the environment caused by breakneck economic growth," according to Reuters News Service.

In the east of the country, Shanghai alone is planning to spend more than Yuan20,000 million on research to help solve industrial pollution problems before the year 2000. This is double the amount which has been spent by the city over the past 5 years, according to a Xinhua news ...
