IN THE MIDST OF STRONG DEMAND and tight supply, the three US caustic potash producers are seeking their first price increases since mid-1995. Although industry players say that demand is the key to the increase, producers are also citing freight costs as a significant motivator.

The increases are considered positive indications for a market that has experienced relatively flat pricing. Since caustic potash pricing is typically glacial in its movement, due largely to there being one dominant producer and modest 2 to 3 percent annual growth, observers and producers are calling this increase a sign of strengthening demand.
