South China's Hainan Province is expanding its petrochemical industry by making systematic use of rich offshore oil and gas resources.

The South China Sea surrounding Hainan is said to hold 58 000 billion cubic metres of natural gas reserves and 29.2 billion tons of oil reserves.

Local sources said the island province has decided to treat the petrochemical industry as an economic development pillar and plans to construct large petrochemical plants to engage in deep oil refining on the western coast in the coming decade.
