THE EFFECTS OF LAST YEAR'S cool summer are still being felt in the citronella oil business, as stockpiled stores are finding few buyers and prices are being kept in check.
Essential oil sales, particularly for citronella, were crimped last year as bloated supplies surpassed lackluster demand during a summer that went down as one of the coldest on record.
For months, sources have been predicting bad things for citronella. "Because of recent low prices, farmers will reduce their distillation of this oil," is the news from a prominent broker. "Further, at current levels the cost of production exceeds the returns they receive on the oil."
