Suharto was born on June 8, 1921 to a peasant family in Kemusu, Argomulyo, in the "Special Territory" of Yogyakarta, then part of the Dutch East Indies. His parents divorced when he was two years old. He was brought up by various relatives. He went to elementary school, junior high school and religious school, completing his childhood education in 1939. He joined the army in 1940 at Gombong, Central Java, attending the School of Military Cadres until 1943. He was there during World War II when the Japanese occupied the country in March 1942.
