Researchers have developed a technique for changing the surface of highly reactive red blood cells (RBCs) that may eventually lead to a universal blood type and allow blood transfusions between people of different blood groups.
The research, presented earlier this month at the annual meeting of the Pediatric Academic Societies, could potentially benefit children with serious blood disorders who require repeated transfusions. The discovery may also be useful in preventing rejection in patients receiving organ transplants as well as in veterinary medicine, where blood banking is quite difficult.
