When Intemeuron Pharmaceuticals Inc. hired Clayton Duncan as CEO of its start-up subsidiary Intercardia Inc. in 1995, the company got more than a chief executive -- it also got innovative antioxidant technology developed at Duke University.
"Intercardia was started to carry bucindolol, a late-stage drug [for congestive heart failure], to the market," the former Sphinx Pharmaceutical executive said. "But I said I didn't want to do a one-product company. I wanted to have some follow-on products in the pipeline, and I thought I had something promising."
