AFTER A DECADE of high hopes and big hype, it appears certain that synthetic lubricants will fail to mature into the cartel-crushing powerhouse of the automotive market its developers hoped it would. But nonetheless, polyalphaolefin-based products are carving respectable and important market niches in the United States and abroad.
