Time Inc.: Disappointing designs
Time, Fortune, Sports Illustrated, Money and People were all Time Inc. inventions. Each had a strong, clear editorial identity. Over the years, a matchless list of art directors--Thomas Cleland, Francis Brennan, Herbert Bayer, Will Burtin, Leo Lionni, Charles Tudor, Richard Gangel, Walter Bernard and Bob Ciano-- provided these magazines with equally strong and clear design identities.
It seems no coincidence to me that the design quality of Time's recent tests has ranged from average to poor. From the pocket-size Woman through TV-Cable Week and Picture Week, these market-inspired efforts lacked the strong editorial ...
