CEILINGS Though it may seem off the wall, the ceiling plane was once considered a delectable surface for decoration. Certainly, ornamentation overhead has represented some of the highest expressions of art. Consider such Byzantine classics as the mosaic-tiled domes of Hagia Sophia and San Marco. The frescoes of
Michelangelo soar across the Sistine Chapel ceiling. Guastavino's tiles induce an upward glance when under ground or under cover in New York. Even more mundane embellishments such as coffers and their gilded surrounds, moldings and an oculus or two attest to the traditional interest in the ceiling as a region not above attention.
