Although the EU's total primary energy demand rose by 48 million tonnes of oil equivalent in 1996, thanks to higher use of oil, natural gas and nuclear power, solid fuels continued to be the poor relation with a 1.2% drop in gross inland consumption to just 16.5% of primary energy consumption. Demand for hard coal lost a full percentage point (to 6.6 million tonnes), according to the European Commission's latest report on the market for solid fuels in the Community, published in mid-December.
