As the ruler since July 23, 1970, when he deposed his father Said Bin Taimour, Sultan Qaboos is immensely popular in Oman. He has concentrated on modernising Oman and creating a balanced socio-economic base. In 27 years of his rule, the sultanate has been transformed from a primitive country without basic infrastructure to one of the most important states in the region. This has been done in an atmosphere of political stability during the past two decades.
