ABC PANEL TO TRY, TRY AGAIN ON PRICING MATTERS Market segments advance; group to redouble effort to hack new path in marketing thicket

The contentious issue of creating market segments has been settled, while pricing issues will undergo further study, according to the chairman of the Audit Bureau of Circulations task force that examined the issues since last summer.

The ABC board of directors gave first passage to the plan at its meeting March 11-14 in Phoenix. The plan will permit newspapers to designate up to 10 market segments as a way to provide advertisers with more targeted circulation data; a publisher could sell subscriptions to qualified readers in those segments at a discount.
