While energy demand in general looks set to increase by 1.8% this year, weather permitting, the solid fuels sector will once again miss out on the rise. Demand for hard coal and lignite should drop by 4% and 2% respectively this year, according to the European Commission's preliminary report on the market for solid fuels in the Community in 1997 and the outlook for 1998. Milder weather in 1997 dampened energy demand, but solid fuels suffered a bigger-than-average decline of 5.2% (-5.1% for hard coal and -5.6% for lignite and peat).
