'Is There a Socialist In the Hall?'
THAT WAS the headline of the story in L'Express onthe French Socialist Party's meeting in Lille a fortnight ago to lay down the program on which the party will run in France's presidential election next year. Four years in power, followed by two years of what the French call co-habitation (a Socialist president sharing power with a conservative prime minister), have drained the ideological starch from French Socialism. The first four years brought on three devaluations, a stalled economy, high unemployment rates, and a recession. ...
