FEDERAL APPEALS COURT HEARS "SECULAR HUMANISM" APPEAL
Judges Asked To Throw Out Religious Right "Fairy Tale"
ATLANTA, June 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Lawyers representing 12 Mobile, Ala., parents and the state board of education today asked a federal appeals court to throw out a controversial lower court ruling in the Alabama "secular humanism" case.
Under his March 4 ruling in Smith v. Board of School Commissioners, U.S. District Court Judge W. Brevard Hand ordered 44 social studies, history, and home economics books banned from Alabama schools on the grounds that they promote this so-called religion in violation of the Constitution.
