North Yemen Oil Reserves Point to Its Future Role
THE 1984 DISCOVERY of oil in North Yemen's Marib Basin proves the country has considerable oil reserves. But are these reserves large enough to make North Yemen a prominent force in the world oil market? Perhaps.
The Marib Basin has at least one proven oil desposit--the Alif Field--and perhaps more. International oil companies plan to also explore other concessions in North Yemen. Experts say that by 1988 North Yemen may be a net exporter of oil, thus adding more oil to an already glutted market. For OPEC, for the West, and especially for North Yemen, the question of of the hour is: how much oil?
