Summary:
The European Commission lodged a complaint at the European Court of Justice on July 2 against France, for failing in its obligation to combat pollution of surface waters used for drinking water in Brittany. The case concerns the departments of C tes d'Armor, Finist re, Morbihan and Ille et Vilaine, where virtually untreated river water is used for drinking water and has consistently registered nitrate levels of more than 50mg/litre.
Under Directive 75/440/EEC, concerning the quality of surface waters intended for the abstraction of drinking water, the mandatory limit value for nitrates is 50mg/litre. Use of polluted water exceeding this limit is ...
