"We were a good-size company and we just got a lot bigger," says Robert Jelenic, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Journal Register Co. of Trenton, N.J.
On May 18, Journal Register announced it was buying five daily newspapers and 20 non-daily publications from Goodson Newspaper Group of Lawrenceville, N.J., for $300 million. Jelenic notes that with the Goodson papers, his company will have 24 daily newspapers with circulation of about 660,000, putting it among the top 25 newspaper companies.
Already, he says, "we're No. 1 in non-daily circulation by a wide margin," with its St. Louis cluster of weeklies the nation's largest. The Goodson ...
