A country bigger in size than western Europe, Kazakhstan has a vast natural resource base. This is combined with a large industrial base with a history of specialisation in the energy sector, left over from the days of the Soviet Union. The government of President Nursultan Nazarbayev is focusing on developing both in a way that would turn Kazakhstan into one of the main energy producing and exporting countries in the world in the 21st century.
