Summary:
The European Commission raised the stakes in the spat over transatlantic trade in grain gluten on July 29 by adopting a proposal to put up new barriers against imports of cereal substitutes from the United States. The proposal it has sent to the Council of Ministers is to suspend concessions on EU corn gluten feed imports from the US, in the form of a tariff of 5 ECU per tonne on imports of up to 2.73 million tonnes, amounting to ECU 13.65 million in a full year. This proposed measure is retaliation against the US decision of June 1, to apply a safeguard clause in the form of a quota on imports of wheat gluten from the European Union into the US. The World ...
