The rise and fall of the American empire
I would like people in Washington to read my new book,Empire, as they all read my novel Lincoln--or at least pretended to. It would help them figure out how the American empire started and what the rationale was. We had very intelligent men in public life then. I don't say I particularly liked all of them, but Theodore Roosevelt, Adm. Alfred Mahan, Brooks Adams and Henry Cabot Lodge put together the American empire.
At the time, we were ready to start a war with a Europeanempire--and Spain's was the weakest. So the Maine blows up--we now know it was spontaneous combustion. William Randolph Hearst blamed it on ...
