The 30-year-old Atlantik Beach Hotel in Freeport, Grand Bahama, was destroyed, making way for an extensive hotel development by Hutchison Whampoa, the Anglo/Chinese conglomerate, reports CANA (July 17, 1998). Prime Minister Hubert Ingraham set off 3,500 charges of explosives, and the 175-room hotel crumbled in 18 seconds. Hundreds of party-goers thronged the Port Lucaya area to watch the hotel fall:
