Article: HMT Technology Corporation Announces Advanced Media Capable of Supporting 13.5 Gbit/in2 Areal Density.

FREMONT, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 8, 1998--HMT Technology Corp. (NASDAQ:HMTT) announced today the demonstration of a recording density of 13.5 Gbit/in2 using high areal density Giant MR (GMR) recording heads produced by Read-Rite Corp. (NASDAQ:RDRT) and HMT patented, ultra low noise, low glide disks.

This areal density could support in excess of 18 GB on a 3 1/2" diameter platter. This represents a new record for both the highest total areal density and linear densities ever achieved.

The Giant MR heads used at Read-Rite for this demonstration were produced in Read-Rite's Fremont production facility. The disks provided by HMT have Mrt of 0.45 memu and ...
