Article: MATERIALS: Oxidation and heat resistant composite from Ube Industries

A composite which is resistant to oxidation has been developed by Ube Industries Ltd of Tokyo, Japan.

Ube claims the composite is stable and does not oxidise even when exposed to oxygen for 1000 hours at 1700oC.

The composite is made from a mixture of aluminium oxide and yttrium aluminium garnet. The two materials are mixed, melted and then quench-hardened inside a special crucible, where the temperature is precisely controlled, so that they crystallise together as a composite with a three dimensional structure.
