Honecker's historic journey home
This week Erich Honecker will vault the barbed-wire barricades and mine fields he helped erect across Central Europe to make history on a journey charged with symbolism and emotion: For the first time since the postwar division of Germany was formalized in 1949, an East German Communist leader will visit West Germany.
Twice before, in 1984 and 1985, the aging East German party boss planned such a visit, only to suffer the deep humiliation of forced cancellation on Moscow's orders. Now, in a new political climate, Honecker's longstanding dream at last is coming true.
