Faulkner: The Man and the Artist: A Biography

I HAVE THOUGHT for years that Joseph Blotner's biography of William Faulkner, published in a one-volume redaction three years ago, was one of the most underrated works of modern literary-biographical history; now, after reading Stephen B. Oates's attempt to produce a work that would go beyond Blotner's supposed defects, I am sure of it. Oates says of his own book in relation to its predecessors:
