Look who's playing peacekeeper now
For the Soviet Union, the United Nations has been a place for courting the Third World with revolutionary rhetoric and denouncing American imperialism and all its works. It defined these works to include U.N. peacekeeping operations, which it refused to fund for 30 years. Now, as part of Mikhail Gorbachev's new, smooth-talking approach to the world, the Soviets are paying up past debts to the U.N. and presenting themselves as true believers in the world organization, in contrast with that penny-pinching doubter, the U.S.
