Sep. 19--Pacific Bell's Caller ID service is getting an upgrade today that should make the service work with more calls in California.
The price of this improvement is that customers who asked Pac Bell to prevent their phone number from being displayed by Caller ID soon won't be able to complete some calls.
Using a new feature available today, such callers instead will hear a recording that tells them their call won't go through. It will give them three options for completing their call: temporarily revealing their number, calling from another phone line or making a 95-cent operator-assisted call.
