Sep. 25--The Environmental Protection Agency ordered Virginia and 21 other states Thursday to make deep cuts in their emissions of nitrogen oxide, the main source of ozone and smog.
The EPA is trying to reduce the amount of ozone transported over long distances to Northeastern states from utilities in Virginia and 21 Southern and Midwestern states. These states will have to reduce their emissions 85 percent by 2007.
The ruling calls for utilities in Virginia to reduce their emissions of the ozone-causing substance by more than 35,000 tons.
