On September18, the national committee of France's employers' federation (CNPF) and the Paris Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCIP) put forward a joint proposal in a bid to break the deadlock on the European Company Statute, a proposal originally tabled in the early 1970s (see European Report No 2321 for an update). The proposed compromise was conceived for and by companies in order to grant those of them wanting to develop business on an EU-wide basis "a legal status which is pan-European, simple, effective and suited to their needs".
