HARRISBURG, Pa., Oct. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- On behalf of Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Ridge, First Lady Michele M. Ridge today announced that more than 40,000 Pennsylvanians contributed $279,988.15 through the Breast and Cervical Cancer Income Tax Check-Off Option with their state tax returns for 1997 -- the first year of this voluntary cancer research contribution.

In May 1997, Gov. Ridge signed into law a bill, sponsored by Rep. Katie True (R-Lancaster), establishing the optional check off beginning with state income tax returns for that year, due by April 1998.
