Oct. 3--Durham's Sugar Hill Records, one of North Carolina's most well-known independent record labels, has been sold to a California-based company headed by Lawrence Welk's son.
The Welk Music Group, led by Larry Welk and based in Santa Monica, Calif., acquired 100 percent of the privately held Sugar Hill Records for an undisclosed sum. The 20-year-old Durham record company will continue as a separate independent label and maintain its downtown headquarters on Chapel Hill Road. The company's founder, Barry Poss, will remain as the president and creative force at Sugar Hill, according to a release announcing the sale.
