Oct. 4--Nearly a dozen tanker trucks sat parked at the Edison Highway dispatch yard for Cox Petroleum Transport early last week. About half of the $100,000-plus rigs were there between shifts. But the others -- representing nearly $1 million in capital investment -- were idled because there weren't enough drivers to put them on the road. The scene last week at Cox wasn't a singular event. Trucking companies in Bakersfield and across the country are suffering from a shortage of qualified drivers, leaving loads undelivered, trucks parked and profits unrealized.
