SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif., Oct. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Members of South Lake Tahoe's city council have set an April 1, 1999, deadline for removing MTBE from gasoline sold in the area.
MTBE, methyl tertiary butyl ether, is a controversial gasoline additive that has contaminated water in locations across California, including South Lake Tahoe where 12 of 34 water wells have been closed.
Judy Brown, mayor pro tem of South Lake Tahoe, predicted other California jurisdictions will follow the city council's lead, as South Lake Tahoe becomes the first California city to consider creating an "MTBE-free zone."
