Oct. 8--Wisconsin companies are taking a hit from the global economic crisis.

After 10 years of steady increases, state exports for the first half of 1998 were $5.2 billion, down 4.9 percent from the same period last year, according to figures released Wednesday by the state Department of Commerce.

The agency's goal of $12 billion in exports this year -- compared with $11.1 billion in 1997 -- is "probably not likely," said acting secretary Phil Albert.

But even though Wisconsin exports to hard-pressed Asia have fallen 20.6 percent, the agency has no plans to curtail state programs that help ...
