Oct. 9--ASHTON, S.D.--Farmers such as Tom Scott have always known that alfalfa makes an ideal feed for cattle.
But now Scott and many of his neighbors are starting to think about alfalfa as a cash crop that could be processed locally -- if a Minnesota cooperative chooses to build a plant nearby.
Minnesota Valley Alfalfa Producers, based in Granite Falls, Minn., plans to build about five new plants to complement its one existing plant. The plan now is to put two of the five in South Dakota, said Patty Hahn, office manager for the cooperative.
