A BATTLE between African armies loomed this week as Zimbabwean and Chadian troops poured into Mbuji-Mayi, a diamond-mining town in south-central Congo, to thwart an expected attack by the rebels, supported by Uganda and Rwanda. On October 12th the rebel movement, which calls itself the Congolese Rally for Democracy, had taken Kindu, an important town with an airbase from which the government could have hit much of the rebel-held territory in eastern Congo.
