The big correction in world stock markets in the past three months is forcing chemical industry management to take another look at the doctrine of shareholder value. Boosting shareholder value has become enshrined as one of the major underlying management imperatives, along with the related pursuits of core competences and competitive advantage. Most of the major restructuring initiatives of the 1990s have been driven by the crusading call for shareholder value, and they have duly led to some huge runups in share prices.
