Oct. 26--WASHINGTON--One of the poorest and least empowered tribes in the country was appalled when it turned to and was spurned by the most powerful court in the land, say tribal officials.
The Santee Sioux Tribe will be forced to close its Class III or Las Vegas-style gaming casino because the Supreme Court refused to hear its plea, unless tribal officials can develop an alternative plan to change the operation to meet Nebraska gaming laws. The Santee Tribe and the state have no gaming compact, which led to litigation and threats of closure.
