Tyre makers across Europe are seeking an adequate replacement for high aromatic process oils in tyre compounds. Dick Russell of Continental AG described progress so far to the Nordic Rubber Conference in Tylosand, Sweden.
Environmental and health and safety issues, some real and some perceived, are driving the issue, according to Russell.
One compelling reason is the protection of process workers from contact with these oils or with fumes from hot rubber containing the oils - which are now classified as 'potential human carcinogens.' Current EU directives require employers to make every effort to replace such substances ...
