The country's four largest independent engine makers are tangled in two patent-infringement lawsuits that are aimed at Detroit Diesel Corp.

One case is under appeal. The other, filed 16 months ago, has yet to be heard.

The cases involve specific engine features. On the line are market share, millions of dollars in attorney fees and perhaps hundreds of millions in damages.
