Nov. 6--For most of the past century, prairie communities fought to obtain railroad service to ensure their futures. But the frontier is settled now, and the cry is going up: "Not in my back yard."

A current high-stakes battle centers on a $1.4 billion project to upgrade and extend service on the Dakota, Minnesota & Eastern, or DM&E Railroad, across southern Minnesota and South Dakota. Some of the track is 100 years old, slowing train traffic to 10 miles per hour through many communities.
