Somme: In northern France, between Paris and the Belgian border, the area around the towns of Albert and Thiepval was the scene of one of the bloodiest battles of the war. On the first day of the July 1916 assault, German machine guns and artillery killed 20,000 British soldiers. The attack quickly bogged down, gaining 10 miles at a cost of 1 million killed and wounded on both sides.
