The past dozen or so years have seen the publication of a number of fine anthologies of essays attempting to recover the life, writings, and social milieu of early modern Englishwomen. I find it appropriate that the anthology--largely edited and written by women--has become the preeminent genre for this project of recovery, because its form recapitulates the group structure of much of women's work throughout social history.
